Good afternoon, Greenville.

The summer heat is making itself known. Find some shade, a swimming hole, or a snow cone and enjoy the season.

And if you hear music in the air, you're not imagining it—we've got a whole lot of jazz happening around town this week, along with plenty of other ways to get out and explore.

Let's get to it!

RESTAURANT SCENE

Kouzina: Fries Inside the Gyro? We're In.

Price range: $14-$28

It’s pretty rare to find a spot that perfectly nails both classic, cheesy comfort food and authentic Greek street food, but Kouzina somehow makes it work. The Skoulikaritis brothers have clearly put a lot of heart into this place, using family recipes and high-quality ingredients that just taste like they were made with care.

They don’t try to overcomplicate things; they just focus on making great, fresh food that hits the spot, whether you’re craving a pizza or a gyro.

Here's what people keep coming back for:

Authentic Greek Gyro: Slices of rotisserie pork, house-made tzatziki, fresh onions and tomatoes, all finished with a signature layer of seasoned fries.

Homemade Spanakopita: A super flaky, buttery pastry packed with a traditional mix of spinach and salty feta.

Kouzina Special Pizza: A classic, loaded pie that doesn't hold back, topped with plenty of pepperoni, sausage, hamburger, mushrooms, onions, and peppers on their house-made dough.

Get Out of Town

This Blue Ridge Town is Worth the Drive

The High Country town of Boone sits at 3,300 feet in the Blue Ridge, cool in summer, spectacular in fall, and easy enough to reach from Greenville for a full weekend without logging serious highway miles.

Outdoors, the options are strong. Moses Cone Memorial Park offers 25 miles of carriage roads through open meadow and hardwood forest, and Wahoo's Adventures runs tube floats down the New River — flat, scenic, and easy enough for any group.

For a bigger view, Grandfather Mountain is 20 minutes south with a mile-high swinging bridge at 5,305 feet. Downtown, King Street is walkable with a plethora of locally owned establishments offering serious food options. Try Sticky Boy Bakery, The Local, Vidalia, and Booneshine Brewing Co.

  • Don't miss: Roughridge Trail at Julian Price Park — short loop, long views, connects to Moses Cone.

  • Best for: Couples, friend groups, anyone who needs a genuine break from the heat.

  • Bring this: A layer — even in July, evenings in Boone drop fast.
