Get Out of Town

Discover South Carolina's Daufuskie Island

South Carolina's southernmost sea island has no bridge, no traffic lights, and no fast food, just quiet beaches, maritime forest, and a Gullah history that runs deep. Getting there is half the experience: a ferry from Hilton Head's Broad Creek Marina (Island Head, ~1 hour) or a water taxi out of historic Bluffton (May River Excursions, 25–30 minutes).

Once on the island, a golf cart is the only way to cover ground. Rent one in advance and have it waiting at the dock — the dirt road network leads to empty beaches, historic sites, and the Old Daufuskie Crab Company, where the Deviled Crab is the move.

Don't miss: A table outside for sunset views over the water.

Best for: Anyone who wants a genuine escape without leaving the state.

Bring this: A cooler, cash, and patience — island time is real here.

Good to know: Book your ferry and golf cart together before you go. Both fill up.
